Many events are planned to observe publicly the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, the tragic loss of lives as well as the heroism in response to the attacks. A comprehensive list of individual cities' events is at http://www.usmayors.org. In addition to public ceremonies, many groups and individuals are calling for honoring victims and heroes by doing more for the common good. - Set a lifetime goal for community service? President Bush calls for every American to dedicate at least 4,000 hours in his or her life to public service. See the Public Service Recognition Week greeting about this at http://www.theroundtable.org/psrw.html. - Continue a month of service to the needy? President Bush calls for service to those in need throughout September. See http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/08/20020831.html. - Observe National Civic Participation Week? Many civic service organizations and the U.S. Senate have designated September 11-17 as National Civic Participation Week. See http://www.participateamerica.org. - Day of National Service? ASPA's online columnists Bob and Janet Denhardt call for September 11 to become a national day of service. See http://www.aspanet.org/publications/COLUMNS/archives/2002/08/denhardts0822.html. Need ideas? Consider the calls above or Austin Police Chief Stan Knee's inspiring message at the July 31 ASPA Luncheon to get involved in helping create opportunities for youth locally. Help reinvigorate democracy by registering voters or serving as an election worker. Volunteer in ASPA at the national or local chapter level.
